Tasmania’s Oyster industry has written to the proponents of the Copping waste facility, citing concern over the proposal in it’s current form.

Executive Officer of Oysters Tasmania Dr Tom Lewis says the proposal poses a threat to 3 major oyster farming areas, a region that produces spat for about half of Australia’s Pacific oyster farming industry.

Southern Waste Solutions are proposing to build a Category C Landfill cell to house waste near Copping in South East Tasmania.

The design includes a leachate collection and containment system underlain by multiple liner systems that are designed to capture any leakage if they were to happen.

Dr Lewis says the industry supports the idea of a Category C landfill but are not convinced about the suitability of the location and the risk it may pose to oyster growing areas.

“We aren’t sure of the likelihood of potential leakage but the potential consequences for Tasmanian growers and the Australian industry are pretty large”.
