Blenheim Bluff oyster lovers can now get their fix, with dozens of the tasty delicacies delivered to food stores in town this week.
Calvert James, owner of The New Funky Fish on Moran St, took delivery of 20 dozen of the southern oysters yesterday.
He said it was hard to know whether all the oysters would sell in one night, but he had been inundated with calls yesterday morning about when they would arrive.
“I’ve had quite a few phone calls. There is a lot of interest. “I’m expecting a lot of people tonight. It is going to drive the cooks mad.”
He wanted to order more in each day but could not get them because of high demand.
“When you think about it, it is just 20 people buying a dozen each.”
He would get a new shipment of Bluff oysters every second day.
He was selling a dozen raw bluff oysters for $29 or cooked oysters at $30 a dozen. One bluff oysters was $3.
Meanwhile, Guyton’s Blenheim received a shipment of 40 dozen Bluff oysters on Wednesday. Yesterday they had just six dozen left, said temporary supervisor Sarah Burdon.
They would be getting another 40 dozen today and another shipment on Saturday.
